What is the role of Tragacanth Gum

What is the role of Tragacanth Gum? For many people this is a strange object, and here's the introduction to it:
Tragacanth Gum comes from the natural secretions of the Astragalus gummifer Labillardie, which is refined and processed in white powder. It has many industrial USES, including fabric, printing and waterproof fabrics. It has been used in medicine for thousands of years, dating back centuries to the Christian era. In folk medicine, it has been used for light diarrhoea, persistent cough, diarrhea, and neuropathy.
